FirstLight Federal Credit Union has been designated the “Official Credit Union Partner of Western Technical College” (WTC), marking a major milestone in the credit union’s commitment to empowering students through financial education, access, and support.
Under this long-term campus-wide partnership, FirstLight is investing significant resources into programs that promote student success both in the classroom and beyond — including scholarships, financial literacy initiatives, and career development opportunities.
Investing in Students: Scholarships & Financial Support
As part of the partnership launch, FirstLight committed $100,000 toward scholarships and financial wellness programs that benefit all Western Tech students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
This investment includes:
- Scholarship funds are awarded to deserving students to help offset tuition and education costs.
- Virtual and onsite financial literacy workshops are designed to strengthen students’ money-management skills.
- Access to a free financial wellness application, Zogo.
Enhancing Financial Wellness & Education
Beyond financial aid, the partnership places a strong emphasis on financial wellness education — from fundamental budgeting to credit management and long-term financial planning. FirstLight’s offerings include both in-person and virtual resources tailored to students and their unique financial challenges.
Leadership Perspectives
Brad Kuykendall, CEO of Western Technical College, emphasized that the partnership aligns with the school’s mission to prepare students for success — not just academically, but in life after graduation.
Anthony Walker, SVP Marketing & Community Impact of FirstLight FCU, added that the credit union is deeply committed to supporting local students through financial education and access to essential financial tools.
A Broader Commitment to Community
This partnership reflects FirstLight’s broader community investment strategy. Alongside the Western Tech collaboration, the credit union and its FirstLight Community Foundation have awarded tens of thousands of dollars in additional scholarships through community programs and events, demonstrating ongoing support for education in the El Paso, Fort Bliss, and Las Cruces region.
